Toronto – In August 2023, Abiy Ahmed’s government arrested Christian Tadelle, a member of parliament and chairperson of the parliamentary audit committee. His arrest came just days after the federal government declared a state of emergency, ostensibly to launch a full-fledged war in the Amhara region of Ethiopia under the pretext of “disarming Fano forces.” That same week, two other members of parliament at the regional and city level, as well as an opposition party figure, were also detained.
Since their arrest, Christian and his colleagues have been languishing in prison, enduring particularly harsh conditions at Awash Arba.
This week, they appeared in federal court to respond to the charges (terrorism) against them. Many read out statements they had prepared, which revealed that their arrests were politically motivated. As a member of parliament, Christian had previously called for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to resign, citing incompetence, and demanded an audit of the Prime Minister’s office. Christian believes his arrest was directly ordered by the Prime Minister. His powerful statement in court has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion.
