Toronto – In the latest string of what is considered to be a groundbreaking development within Fano forces, two major groups in Gondar have announced a merger to work under a single command.

Amhara Fano in Gondar and Amhara Fano Gondar Command were operating under their respective leadership. They ended it and are now united as one under the name Fano Amhara Unity In Gondar.

So far three Fano groups were operating in Gondar. There is still one more Fano group that is operating on its own in the Gondar area. However, according to Ethiopian media services, the group that has not joined the merger is not as big as the one that merged.

It was about a month ago that leaders of the two groups reportedly reached an agreement to merge.  The new organization has a total of 42 leaders, according to disclosure from the organization.

Arbegna Habte Wolde is named chairperson of Amhara Unity In Gondar. Arbegna Baye Kenaw is named deputy chair and Argbegna Samuel Baledil has become deputy Chair and Military commander.

“For those who counseled us and tirelessly helped us including with their prayers, we would like to say here is the fruit of your work,”  Fano Amhara Unity In Gondar said in its first statement it released a single entity.

Yohannes Nigussu, spokesperson, told Anchor media that Fano Amhara Unity In Gondar.

Work to merge with the other Fano entity that is still operating on its own in Gondar.

Analysts see the development as a milestone in light of the work to unite Fano forces in the four major traditional provinces – Gojjam, Gondar, Shewa and Wollo – under a single command.

As well, some fano leaders from other parts of the Amhara region hailed the development as decisive and elating.

“…’Amhara Fano Andenet in Gondar’ which the Amhara Fano in Gondar and Amhara Fano Gondar Command formed is very decisive, one that makes us proud and elated. On behalf of Amhara Fano in Gojjam, I would like to express great joy and admiration to the brothers who are part of this historical decision,” Aseres Mare Damtie, head of political division of Gojam Fano, said in a message he shared on social media.

Most of the groups in the Gojjam area of the region have reportedly united as a single force although there is still one group that is still operating on its own.

There have been reports that talks have been underway to unite forces in Shewa too.

Fano forces have been under political pressure from  supporters to unite and coordinate the struggle better.
