Toronto – The Ethiopian government seems to have decided to withdraw troops from the Amhara region of Ethiopia after over a year and half military operation which is said to have claimed the lives of thousands of civilians.
The decision is not made public by the Federal government. It was Let. General Alemshet Degefe, advisor to the Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Defense Force, revealed this during an interview with Major Woinhareg Bekele, journalist for the Defense Force Media unit (available here).
“It is not the mission of the defense force to maintain law and order in every district. Police and militia will take over that,” he added. There have been reports that the government trained hundreds of thousands of militia forces in the Amhara region with the intent to use them against fano forces.
Let. Alemeshete also highlighted that the army needed a “break, withdraw to its barracks and train for another mission.” He insinuated that the army was fatigued in the operation in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. The Fano forces have been resisting government forces in all areas of the region for over a year and half now.
It was in August 2023 that Abiy Ahmed’s government introduced a state of emergency and ordered a military operation in the Amhara region of Ethiopia with the stated objective of “disarming Fano forces” – an operation that has brought about humanitarian crisis and large scale devastation including civilian deaths.
Let. General Alemeshete Degfe made claims that the “extremist group in the Amhara region [a reference to Fano forces] is downgraded and is now operating as a bandit.” It was however in November 2024 that the Defense Chief spoke first about the withdrawal of the defense force during a meeting with government officials in the Amhara region. At the time, he was cited as saying that the Defense force will withdraw if the operation in the region is not completed by the end of December 2024.
However, reports from multiple sources suggest that many parts of the Amhara region of Ethiopia are still under the control of the Forces. There are also reports of ongoing war in parts of the Amhara region. Asres Mare Damtie, head of the political division of Fano forces in the Gojjam area of Ethiopia, on Saturday announced that Fano forces undertook an intense offensive in the Bahir Dar area and “from all directions.” Abune Hara fortified trench was targeted in the offensive and made claims that Fano forces captured nine government soldiers and seized dshk, bren machine gun and 56 AK47. The government is yet to remark on that.

Good News : Ethiopian Defense Force to withdraw from Amhara region
Abiy Ahmed must resign and be locked behind bars for the genocide he committed against his own people, Amhara, Tigray, Oromia , Gurage, Wolaita, etc., all Ethiopians, under his repugnant regime. Fingers crossed, the incoming president, Mr Donald Trump, brings this genocidal regime to an end .
