Toronto – Somaliland’s president-elect, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi (Irro), met with outgoing President Muse Bihi Abdi on Saturday at the presidential palace in Hargeisa.

The meeting, which focused on a briefing, was attended by the Chairman of the Senate and other representatives, according to government sources.

Last week, Somaliland’s Electoral Commission declared Irro the winner of the November 13, 2024, election.

He achieved a landslide victory with nearly 64% of the vote. More than 1 million eligible voters participated in the election, casting ballots across over 2,000 polling stations in Somaliland.

The election was widely regarded as free, fair and democratic adding more weight on Somaliland’s reputation.

Ethiopia has officially congratulated Irro on his win. Read more here.

In January 2024, Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Somaliland, granting Ethiopia access to 20 kilometers of coastal land on a 50-year lease. This agreement has sparked concerns about potential regional tensions, particularly regarding Somaliland’s bid for international recognition as an independent state. The fate of the MoU remains unclear, as the president-elect has yet to disclose his stance on the matter.

  1. These two honorable gentlemen fit the description and qualities of the label ‘visionaries’. They slugged it out during the election campaign but when it was all over, you can see them shaking hands in the spirit of brotherly love. Who said democracy is impossible or it is not the time for it in Africa? Weren’t we told by the very leaders of the old country in the 1990’s that the people of Ethiopia have lived under regimes ruled by despots that persuasion alone ain’t gonna work for/with them?

Didn’t we see certain guy even having the audacity to tell a foreign government official that those people need to be kicked around to keep them straight? You remember that? That was an exact carbon copy from the working protocol of Lenin, Stalin and Mao. ‘I am the only one who knows what you need. Not you, me!!!’ This is the mental affliction those in leaderships of all warring groups all share. Just look at the press releases of those in Addis/Finfinne and others in some forsaken wildernesses in both Oromia and Amhara regions. They are all crafty in how to call themselves and well disposed in feeding on the raw emotions of the hapless youth.

Just look at what they call themselves. Who gave them the mandate to designate themselves as such? They may call themselves different names but there is one affinity that put them in the same category. They all worship the barrels of their guns and violence that comes with it. For them, the order of things is, violence first and then, may be, democracy of their own brand. Nuff said about these bigots and connivers!

Meanwhile, I profusely commend and thank the people of Somaliland for showing the skeptical world that Africans can conduct open and fair elections and losers accepting defeat in grace. Bravo! Bravo!! Bravo!!!
