Toronto – Leulseged Tadesse, Ethiopia’s new Ambassador to the Federative Republic of Brazil, tendered his credentials to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva this week, according to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.
Ethiopia is keen to enhance bilateral relations with Brazil to a “higher strategic partnership” level, focusing on economic ties, particularly in investment, trade, tourism, and agriculture. Ambassador Leulseged communicated this interest to President Lula during the reception ceremony, as reported by the Ministry.
Diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Brazil were established in 1951. While Brazil is a founding member of BRICS, Ethiopia officially joined the bloc in January this year. Ethiopia sees the platform as useful to enhance cooperation with Brazil.
“Through the BRICS platform, …, Ethiopia and Brazil will have the opportunity to strengthen their ties in the business sector,” Ambassador Leulseged was quoted as saying.
Ethiopia also expressed interest in collaboration on the reform of global multilateral institutions.
The Ambassador stated Ethiopia’s readiness to “strengthen cooperation by working closely on the reform of international institutions and on advancing common agendas, particularly in expanding the United Nations Security Council, mobilizing development finance, eradicating poverty and hunger, and combating climate change,” as per the Ministry’s update.
According to the Ministry, Brazil has shown a positive response to Ethiopia’s interest, particularly in agricultural cooperation.
The Brazilian President “vowed to enhance multifaceted diplomatic relations between the two countries, particularly in the economic field, notably agriculture.”
President Lula previously visited Ethiopia in February this year.
