Toronto – Abiy Ahmed’s administration declaration of “final military operation” against Fano forces in the Amhara region is happening at a time when the attention of the world is shifting from the Russo-Ukraine war to the Middle East.
The series of military campaigns so far in the region were a disaster to civilians rather than Fano forces. The reason, reported by reputable human rights organizations, is that government forces have been extensively engaged in rights abuse including extrajudicial killings, drone attacks and indiscriminate shelling of civilians targets.
It has been more than three days since the government declared a total war in the Amhara region while arresting hundreds of thousands of government officials in the region on alleged grounds of “supporting the Fano forces.” As many as 40,000 additional troops are said to be deployed in this round of military campaign.
According to information from Fano Spokesperson, the government forces seem to be losing battles after battles in the past three or four days.
To support their military operations Fano forces imposed restriction on vehicle movement in the region as of October 3, 2024.
Ethiopia Media Services spoke to Yohannes Alemayehu, deputy spokesperson of Fano forces, who shared about the latest battles in that part of Amhara region. Battles were reported in Quarit, Bure, Mankusa, Bure, Kucha and Finote Selam.
The spokesperson claims 293 government forces were killed in the past few days. It is pointed out that Fano was not fighting a defense war. It rather initiated offensive on key positions of government forces. He also said that fano forces have seized a sizable firearm.
In South Gondar, Gaynet area about 65 government soldiers were reportedly killed. 4 Fano forces killed and 5 wounded.
Government forces operation in the area is said to be massive. As well, there were multiple drone strikes in Gondar. The number of civilian victims from it is unspecified.
According to Ethio News, there were also fighting between Fano and government troops in Shoa and Wollo areas. Images purportedly showing deserted roads in these areas due to the restrictions imposed by Fano are also circulating on social media.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has remarked about Fano forces claim of military gains from battles in the last two days.
