Toronto – Days after Fano Forces took control of many towns in the North Gondar zone of the Amhara region, reports are now emerging that Gondar city – a major tourist attraction in the region – is under Fano control.
On Tuesday, credible reports with links to the town reported heavy fighting between government forces and Fano forces. Another report emerging on Tuesday in the afternoon seems to suggest that Fano forces are in full control. However, borkena was unable to confirm it from other sources.
However, Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) on Tuesday reported that Fano forces managed to close roads to Gondar and flights to Gondar were suspended.
The source reported that there has been an intense exchange of fire between government forces and Fano in Maraki and Genfo Kuchi parts of Gondar city. Heavy weapons were fired at night time. Azezo kebele 18 , Ayra , Addis Alem, and Alem Ber have also witnessed heavy fighting.
Fano forces were mostly fighting from the southern part of the city and government soldiers were from the northside, according to EMS.
Transportation to and from Gondar has been suspended.
There are accusations that government soldiers have been targeting civilians in Gondar and a hotel in the city was shelled by heavy artillery.
Yesterday Fano forces announced that they took control of several major towns in Northern Gondar including Debrark.
This past week, there has been heavy fighting in most parts of Gondar.
Abiy Ahmed’s administration has been planning to eliminate Fano forces by mid September. As has been the case in the past one year, Fano forces are getting more ground in the region and continue to enjoy popular support.
Most rural towns are under fano forces and government structures are removed from the parts of Amhara region where the rebel forces are in control.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has not yet remarked about the fighting and reported capture of Gondar, a strategic town.
