There was no issue whatsoever related to wearing Hijab in Axum, including in schools, until about two months ago, says Daniel Berhane

Toronto – On Tuesday, there was a massive female Muslim students Protest in Mekelle, the seat of Tigray regional government. It was about the alleged restriction not to wear hijab in high schools in Axum – one of the top tourist destinations in the region.
It has been nearly two months since the “restriction” emerged as one of the areas of advocacy. Why only in the last two months not before is a question that seems to be overlooked in the Ethiopian Media.
Daniel Birhane, who runs Horn Affairs Youtube channel, and who also used to be a vocal pro-Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) activist, took a closer look at the issue. His youtube channel offers updates on current affairs in the Tigray region and beyond.
In his latest appearance on his own channel, he shared a close view of the issues surrounding this whole movement about hijab restrictions.
From what he said, there were no policy based hijab restrictions in schools in the ancient city of Axum to where the first Hejira was made in the 7th century. He mentioned that he spoke to individuals who could be familiar with practices in schools regarding hijab two months ago. His finding is that there could be individual teachers in schools who try to impose their own rules.
However, he said that he has confirmed there was no policy based and school wide hijab restrictions – apparently in any of the schools in Axum. Former students have confirmed it, he added.
While the restriction is only a recent development, it does not have a legal foundation. What is intriguing is, based on his findings, that the restriction was actually imposed from Mekelle, and has little to do with the education bureau in Axum.
What is confirmed in that regard is that Fetlework Gebreegziabhier (aka Monjorino) who is head of the TPLF office gave the order to Axum. Borkena has not verified it from other sources. However, it appears clear that a form of political component was embedded in it although it sounds perplexing as to what any political group in the region could achieve from it.
It appears the order to ban hijab in schools was given only in October 2024. If it is indeed the top TPLF official of one of the factions (Borkena has published several reports about TPLF factions) that gave the order, it begs the question as to what the motive behind it was.
Daniel’s Brief about it is embedded below. Share your thoughts in the comment section.

They have been oppressing Muslims since the 7th century. Don’t be fooled by the history being told that the first Muslims came to that region which is true but that’s the end of it. From that time on, the local people who embraced Islam have been subjected to killings, forced conversions to Christianity displacements. Even not long ago Yohannes decreed that all Muslims in tigray covert to Christianity or face death and he killed many of them by burning them and those who did not die were forced to be Christians. No wonder Tigray has the smallest Muslim population in Ethiopia considering Muslims came there first. Muslim population in Tigray is 4% while in a tiny south Wollo Amara region is 89%. So what is being said is true, in tigray, Muslims are not even allowed to bury their dead In that forsaken city.
Yes, yes, yes! I have a first-hand information that the shameful deed has actually taken place not only in Axum but in other towns too. It doesn’t make any difference whether an individual Weyane did it or an entity took it as a policy. Most of Tegaru and “TPLF” itself see Tigray as Orthodox Christian.
