His comrades remember Yohannes Alemayehu as “brave hearted” selfless Fano leader

Toronto – Yohannes Alemayehu, a prominent Gojjam Fano leader who served as spokesperson, is reportedly killed. He was killed in action.  Gojjam Fano has confirmed the story. 

He was also chairperson of the Amhara Fano Second Teferra division.  He was killed in action near Washera. 

“Brave fano Yohannes Alemayehu who had been relentlessly struggling in the effort to reverse the existential threat facing Amhara people is scarified in dignity during face to face combat against enemy on the night of Tir 12 to 13 [January 20/21] in Washera,” Fano Asres Mare announced on Wednesday in a social media update. 

Before the battle in Washera where he was killed, he took part in several battles in Gojjam including in Mota. Adet, Milachber, Feres bet, Quarit. 

Asres Mare described Yohannes as “brave hearted” Fano who is a role model Fano. 

He was born in Gonje Kolela district . Gonj wo Anzegem area of Gojjam. As a student at Bahir Dar University (he was reportedly a distinction student), he was a member of Amhara Students Association  which he served as a leader – according to the news update from Asres Mare Damtie. 

The statement did not mention whether he is said to rest. However, it said there will be an event organized to commemorate and celebrate the life of Fano Yohannes Alemayehu. 

The statement also expressed condolence to the families and friends of Fano Alemayehu. 

There have been reports of intense fighting in many areas of Gojjam area of the Amhara region over the past few days including near Bahir Dar, seat of the Amhara region of Ethiopia. 

Hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian Defense force members have been deployed to the Amhara region since August 2023. Marshet Tshayu, spokesperson for Gojjam Fano, estimated the number of government troops deployed to be over 200,000. 

The war is still ongoing in many parts of the Amhara region.
