Ethiopian Airlines gets Brazilian “The Order of Rio Branco” Award

The Government of Brazil awarded Ethiopian Airlines  “The Order of Rio Branco (Ordem de Rio Branco) award”  in recognition of service excellence during the Coronavirus Pandemic. 

According to a news update from the Airline,  Former Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam and Former Ethiopian Airlines Operational Director in Brazil & South America Mr. Girum Abebe received the award. 

Ethiopian Airlines had been providing COVID-19 vaccines and lifesaving supplies to Brazil at the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. The airline was also transporting similar supplies to Europe and the rest of Africa.  

It was also repatriating Brazilian nationals. 

Former CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde Gebremariam, provided excellent leadership at a time when the Airline industry was hit hard due to the pandemic.  He retired last week due to health conditions, and he is currently in the United States getting medical attention. 

Dozens of Ethiopian Airlines passenger planes were converted to cargo planes, by Ethiopian Airlines’ in-house mechanics, as part of a new strategy to survive the devastating economic impact of the pandemic.  

The Airline managed to emerge profitable during that challenging time without laying off staff, making salary adjustments or getting a bailout from the government. 

Ethiopian Airlines currently has over 131 planes.
