Eritrean Airlines commenced commercial flights to Ethiopia

Eritrean Airlines started commercial flights to Ethiopia. Eritrean passenger’s plane touched down at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa for the first time in more than twenty years.

Eritrean transport and tourism ministers,and head of the Airline were on board of the flight, according to Ethiopian State media report.

Deputy minister in the ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hirut Zemene, and other senior government officers warmly received the Eritrean ministers and passengers up on arrival at Bole.

Ethiopian Airlines commenced a flight to Asmera on July 18,2018 as a result of the decision by Ethiopian and Eritrean government to leave behind state of war and embark on a new era of relation for mutual benefits by fostering economic,political,social and cultural relation. Ethiopian Airlines already announced that it has purchased 20% share from Eritrean Airways but the value of it was not disclosed.

The first Ethiopian Airlines flight to Eritrea in twenty years carried 465 passengers including former Ethiopian prime minister Hailemariam Desalgne and Patriarch Abune Mathias, among other notable figures.

In a related development, Ethiopian Maritime Affairs Authority (EMMA) has announced that it will start to use the port of Massawa for import and export in about two weeks time, according to The Ethiopian Reporter. The port of Assab, which is even more convenient and less costly, is reportedly not yet ready.
