Takele Uma, acting mayor of Addis Ababa City, said on Monday that his administration has recovered a land which he described as “illegally appropriated.”
The Mayor claims 460 thousand square meters of the land was illegally misappropriated from the farming community in Nifas Silk – Lafto sub-city area of the city.
It was held by an individual, according to the acting Mayor. However, the identity of the person is undisclosed. “The land he got by cheating the farmers is given back to the farmers,” he said.
He also said that National Information and Security Services and Addis Ababa City police were involved in the investigation of the case.
The recovered land “will be used by the farmers to practice urban farming,” he added.
However, critics say that Takele Uma, whom they consider as one of the radical ethnic Oromo nationalists with exclusive ownership claims of Addis Ababa City, is pursuing his agenda of altering the ethnic composition of Ethiopia’s capital in a way to make ethnic Oromos numerically dominant.
There has been reported demolition of houses in the capital Addis Ababa during the months of Ramadan.

Mayor Takele Uma is such a disciplined Mayor all of the Addis Ababa residents are lucky to have him as their Mayor .
The Addis Ababa residents should show. their gratitude to Mayor Takele Uma every chance they get so he doesn’t leave Addis Ababa , because good Mayors are hard to find and keeping them is a challenge too.
After seeing what a good job Mayor Takele Uma is doing for Addis Ababa, it is highly likely cities in the Oromia region do want him to become their Mayor after the next election so Addis Ababa residents need to do whatever they can to keep Mayor Takele Uma in Addis Ababa so he doesn’t decide to leave Addis Ababa for another city in Oromia.
We all should learn to recognize talent, encourage those who possess it to flourish, learn from successful and talented people rather than admonish them, and practice those characteristics all the way up and down the ladder of society. Those characteristics can be found at the lowest levels of societal ladder (eg. shoe shiners).
I admire Takele Umba and support him regardless of his ethnicity, whether born in Addis Abeba or not. He is Ethiopian and has shown admirable skills to manage the city. Kudos for him!
In the same vein, I admire and support the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Ato Tewelde Gebremariam. I see him as a talented and knowledgeable manager at par or even better than any international CEO of Airlines.
There are many talented and successful Ethiopians, regardless of their ethnicity. We should all cultivate to recognize and support them regardless of their ethnicity. That is how nations are built. The USA is an excellent example of that, and erected their Statute of Liberty to welcome talents (and money) from abroad to build such a successful country. The German born brilliant Einestine is an example. So many (from every where) to mention….
