Part of the reason why the government made a leadership change in the Gambella region of Ethiopia is related to persistent security problem in the region

Toronto – The Gambella regional council on Thursday elected Alemitu Omud as the new president for the region. She had been serving as state minister in the Ministry of the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs (MoWSA) at the Federal level of government. Before that, the has served as head of Gambella region’s women and children office
“Focus will be given to address the people’s basic peace and development demands,” the news update from Gambella region Press Secretariat office cited her as saying. She said so in her first address to the region’s council.
It was in an emergency meeting that the region’s council approved her appointment as the new president of the region – taking over from Omod Ugulu who has been serving in that role for more than six years now. The council unanimously approved her appointment, according to the Press Secretariat update.
According to the update from the region’s press secretariat, the leadership change was needed because the ruling party intends to assign Omud Ugulu to a “different mission.” It was also said that there were limitations to implement the directions given in peace and development works despite several accomplishments in the sector.
Alemitu has called on all bodies in the regional government to be determined and work to address the demand for peace and development.
The region has been experiencing persistent security problems over the past few years – as was the case for many other parts of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Human Rights Council had been releasing statements about the killings and rights abuse in the region – a development which was linked to the security situation. There were times when curfews were introduced due to the security situation.
Ethnic tension was one of the problems in connection with the security crisis in the region, as has been reported by borkena in the past. Gambella is one of the regions in Ethiopia where different ethnic communities live.
The region has also experienced a recurring natural disaster. Last year, thousands of people were displaced following a devastating flood.
