Toronto – Ali Akbar Rezaei, Iran’s Ambassador Designate to Ethiopia, has arrived in Ethiopia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MFAE) on Wednesday disclosed that Ali Akbar Rezaei held talks with Mesganu Arega, State Minister.
Reactivating Ethio-Iran joint ministerial commission meeting is one the tasks that the Ambassador designates plans to achieve during his tenure. Economic, scientific, and technical cooperation will be discussed, according to Ali Akbar.
He also reportedly expressed readiness “to further scale up bilateral relations in various sectors, including technology transfer, education, trade, and investment.”
The Ministry said that Ambassador Mesganu congratulated Iran for the election it conducted and expressed Ethiopia’s commitment to work with the newly elected President, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran’s 8th president, Ebrahim Raisi, was killed in a helicopter accident in May 2024 – an incident that triggered speculations about foul play involved by forces hostile to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The State Minister also highlighted readiness on the part of Ethiopia to work with the new president of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian and talked about the need to explore platforms for cooperation including BRICS to advance mutual cooperation.
The diplomatic relation between Ethiopia and Iran is well over 70 years old. Iran’s Embassy to Ethiopia is one of the oldest embassies in Addis Ababa.
