Toronto – A week after news of a peaceful dialogue to resolve internal differences, initiated by religious leaders, the Tigray region Interim Administration is accusing a faction of the TPLF of moves to take power by force and creating confusion.
Local Ethiopian news sources reported on Sunday that the Interim Administration released a statement saying, “the group does not hesitate to engage in any kind of wrongdoing for the sake of power, as has been seen repeatedly.”
On November 1, Tigray Mass Media Agency (TMMA) reported that the two factions held talks in the presence of religious leaders (bishops who had broken away from the Holy Synod of the Ethiopian church) and were expected to meet “soon.” However, this does not appear to have materialized.
According to local sources, the Interim Administration claims that the faction under Debretsion Gebremichael has “elevated obstructing the Interim Administration’s plans to an overthrow of government and the spread of anarchism.” It is also reported that this group has openly declared it will not accept the religious leaders’ attempt to mediate the conflict through negotiation.
Furthermore, the Tigray Interim Administration accuses Debretsion’s faction of claiming that it has “reached an agreement” with regional army leaders and completed preparations to assume full control of the government structure. The administration views this claim as an attempt to “create confusion.”
Despite the tensions, the Interim Administration appears committed to dialogue, expressing that senior members are “still ready to resolve the matter through peaceful dialogue.” The administration has also called on the entire region to support efforts for a peaceful resolution.
Last week, however, Debretsion’s faction reportedly stated that no agreement had been reached to resolve the conflict through dialogue.
The division within the TPLF became public in August when Debretsion’s faction organized the 14th party congress, dismissing and outlawing the faction led by Getachew Reda, who was appointed by the federal government as President of the Interim Administration. On the surface, the difference is said to be related to the congress itself and re-registration with the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE). The TPLF was designated as a terrorist group in May 2021. However, the parliament lifted it following the Pretoria agreement which ended the war between TPLF and Abiy Ahmed’s government.
Political tension has since August 2024 intensified in the region, with rising security issues and local political parties protesting, calling for the establishment of an inclusive regional government.
Meanwhile, a new political movement called Tintag Woledo Tigray has emerged in the region as an underground group. The movement opposes what it describes as “oppression” and has vowed to resist it.

Trade, aid, security: What does Trump’s win mean for Africa?
Wedaeli Chibelushi
BBC News
There are also worries Trump might shut Pepfar, a long-running US initiative that has poured huge sums into fighting HIV in Africa.
Africa gets most of its aid from the US, which said it had donated almost $3.7bn over this financial year.
But Trump’s last administration repeatedly made proposals to slash foreign aid worldwide, according to reports
In 2023, the US said it had invested more than $22bn since Biden came to power.
But there are concerns Trump might roll back on this investment and trade. The soon-to-be president has more of a protectionist, insular outlook than Biden – one of the slogans for his first term was “America First”.
Trump’s views on illegal immigration are clear – during his 2024 campaign he promised to deport one million people who do not have legal permission to be in the United States.
This concerns Africa as in 2022, around 13,000 African migrants were recorded at the US-Mexico border, according to US Customs and Border protection data. By 2023, this figure had quadrupled to 58,000. Some of these hopefuls speak of fleeing war, persecution and poverty.
However, Trump has in the past stepped in to help Nigeria fight Boko Haram, a group of Islamist militants which has plagued the West African country for 15 years.
There is also the issue of Sudan’s civil war, which has been rumbling on for 18 months and has killed tens of thousands of people.
“Trump is very transactional,” Mr Moore said. “I’m really doubtful that the Trump administration is going to care more about what’s happening in Sudan than, say, the Biden administration did.”
Here goes the neighborhood of commies and their protégés!!! Just mind you, these are the same individuals that ignited a war they could not win on all fronts. They lobbed long range missiles on Asmara and Bahr Dar. They roamed in many localities in Afar region killing everyone in sight and destroying property they stumbled on. They share responsibility for the death of close to a million citizens. Their arrogance is unfathomable. Now when they could not find others to pick a fight with, they are turning on themselves. This is a perfect example when some one is fighting his own shadows. Commies, commies! Do I have utter incurable contempt for commies and their protégés or what!!!!
