Toronto – President Hassan Sheik Mohammed’s government in Somalia has been relentless over the past ten or so months in its campaign against the Ethiopian government. It has been taking a series of measures to put pressure on Ethiopia and put the country in bad light following the memorandum of understanding signed with Somaliland – a de facto state for over thirty-three years.
In the latest string of measures, the Somalia government expelled an Ethiopian Diplomat in Somalia. Ali Mohammed Adan, who has been serving as an counsellor at the Ethiopian Embassy, is instructed to leave Mogadishu within 72 hours.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia made allegations that the Ethiopian diplomat had violated the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations.
The statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia made claims that the Ethiopian diplomat was involved in the “internal affairs.” However, it did not specify how the diplomat did so.
It partly reads ” …The Ministry announces that Mr. Ali Mohamed Adan, currently serving as Counselor II at the Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Somalia, has engaged in activities incompatible with his diplomatic role. These actions constitute a breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), particularly Articles 41 and 42, which mandate diplomats to respect the laws of the host nation and abstain from involvement in its internal affairs….”
The Ministry has also released the image of the diplomat in military fatigue along with the statement.
The Ethiopian government has not yet remarked about the situation.
Relations between Somalia and Ethiopia deteriorated after the latter signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland on January 1, 2024. While the agreement was an effort on the part of Ethiopia to gain access to the sea, for Somaliland it represents a measure to get recognition as an independent state.
Somalia sees Ethiopia’s action as a violation of its sovereignty and has been mobilizing a combination of diplomatic and political campaigns in addition to signing up a defense agreement with Ethiopia’s arch enemy , Egypt.
For more than 33 years, Somaliland existed as a separate political entity with its own army, constitution and currency. Somaliland rejects Somalia’s claim that it is part of Somalia.
In a recent interview with BBC Somali service, Muse Bihi Abdi accused Somalia of using Egypt to assert control over Somaliland. He said it will not succeed.

Somalis are complicated but they have more unity than we do. Most Ethiopians in America are sellouts.
