Toronto – Somalia’s Federal government in Mogadishu is making allegations against the Ethiopian government in connection with Al-Shabab activity in Somalia.
In a press release published on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia made claims that “Past Ethiopian deployments [in Somalia] have led to increased Al-Shabaab activity and little development.” It went on to say that the issue “… demands a more strategic selection of troop partners to ensure AUSSOM aligns with Somalia’s security and development goals.”
The Ethiopian government has been hailing the sacrifices made in Somalia, as it puts it, for over a decade and believes that its peacekeeping missions had weakened the Al-Shabab group. Thousands of Ethiopian troops had been killed in Somalia in the fight against Al-Shabab Forces. The assessment from some politicians and military officers in Ethiopia is that Al-Shabab would have fully controlled Somalia’s government had it not been for the peace keeping mission in the country.
Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not make accusations against other troop contributing countries for the peace keeping mission in the country.
Somalia indicated that Ethiopia will not be part of the peace keeping mission after the end of the ATMIS mission by the end of this year.
In addition to alleged help to Al-Shabab, Somalia pointed out another reason why it does not want Ethiopia to be part of the peace keeping mission that will replace ATMIS – sovereignty issue.
It said “Ethiopia’s recent unilateral actions, including an illegal agreement with Somalia’s northern region, violate our sovereignty and erode the trust essential for peacekeeping.” The reference Somalia made as an “illegal agreement” is the Memorandum of Understanding Ethiopia and Somaliland signed on January 1, 2024.
Hassan Sheik Mohammed’s government expressed its stand regarding the upcoming new peacekeeping mission in the country. Somalia itself wants to pick contributing member countries.
Part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement reads, “We remain committed to working with the African Union, United Nations, and European Union on AUSSOM, with Somalia leading the selection of partners that respect our sovereignty. ”
Egypt is one of the countries that Somalia wants to contribute troops for the peace keeping mission. In addition to part of the peace-keeping mission, Somalia has signed a defense pact and has made arrangements for the deployment of Egyptian forces on the basis of bilateral arrangement.
Ethiopia has been opposing the idea of Egyptian troops deployment to Somalia saying it will trigger region wide instability.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has not yet remarked on the allegation Somalia made in connection with Al-Shabab.
