Toronto – Ethiopia on Sunday issued a statement on the terrorist attack in Mogadishu which is said to have claimed the lives of at least six people and wounded ten others. And it was in two locations. A Reuters report, which cited police and witnesses, said the bomb blast took place on Saturday in the “capital Mogadishu and a town in the country’s Middle Shabelle region.”

The statement that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia issued noticeably conveyed a message of condemnation to the people of Somalia ignoring Hassen Sheik Hassen’s government in Mogadishu.

The two short paragraph message reads : “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia condemns the heinous attack in Mogadishu, Somalia. The Ministry conveys its condolences to the family of the deceased…Ethiopia reiterates its commitment to stand in solidarity with the people of Somalia in their fight against terrorism.”

Somalia has been experiencing a recurring suicide attacks from the terrorist Al-Shabab group. There have been as many as eleven suicide attacks in Somalia over the past few months.

Ethiopia’s concern about the Egyptian arms shipment to Somalia

This month, Egypt shipped unspecified loads of heavy weaponry including anti-aircraft rockets and other firearms to Mogadishu. The Foreign Affairs Ministry of Somaliland, its breakaway region in the North that has been existing as a full fledged state on its own except for the lack of international recognition as an independent state, issued a statement expressing concern that the weapon Egypt sent to Hassan Sheik’s government might fall in the hands of terrorist forces in Somalia.

Somalian government officials have been sharing images of Egyptian ships arriving in Mogadishu in a way confirming the shipment of arms.

Ethiopia, like Somaliland with whom it signed a Memorandum of Understanding over access to the sea, expressed concern that the arms might fall in the hands of terrorists. It sees the development as something that could destabilize the entire region. It is also opposing the presence of Egyptian troops in Somalia.

Egypt is preparing to send  10,000 forces to Somalia as part of the African Union  peace-keeping mission with Somalia  and on a bilateral arrangement with Hassan Sheik’s government.

Several regional states in Somalia opposed Egyptian presence in their country. Those who oppose the move believe that Egypt is exploiting the tension between Ethiopia and Somalia to pursue its Nile water agenda and that Somalia could be a battle ground.
