Toronto – The Ethiopian government is making claims that it has “enough humanitarian support in stock” necessary to address existing needs of those who need it.

Ethiopian News Agency (state media) – cited Shiferaw Teklemariam, Commissioner of Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission, as saying  “there is adequate preparation and humanitarian aid in stock to address those who need it.”

The government is pointing fingers at an unspecified group for obstructing distribution. Much of the Amhara region has been under fano forces for many months now.

“Entities operating to disrupt the government actions to distribute humanitarian support on its own capacity should refrain from it,” it was said.

The government claim came in response to reports of famine crisis in Bugna, North Wollo, the Amhara region of Ethiopia. It is making claims that it has undertaken a study about a month ago to identify communities that need humanitarian aid priority.

The commissioner is cited as saying “Two studies related to vulnerability were conducted on family level and as a whole inNorth Wollo, Bugna. At the time, there was no major problem. But gaps were observed in some pocket areas.”

It also said the “security situation in the area became an obstacle to distributing humanitarian support.”

The Commissioner further claimed that “Those who link the issue to political advantage and use it to advance ‘inappropriate’ objectives have nothing to do with humanitarian support.”

Furthermore, the government said it is working to tackle the problem, and has reached consensus with religious leaders and elders to coordinate efforts to ensure that the support reaches only the intended recipients.  He also said that “government structures at different levels are working to address the issue.”

Earlier this week the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa stated that it  ” is closely following the recent reports of a nutrition crisis in Bugna zone, North Wollo, Amhara region.” It was also indicated that nutrition support to the affected area was mobilized in the affected areas.

Much of the areas affected in North Wollo are under the control of Fano forces, as is the case for the rest of most of the Amhara region. They have been urging the international community to deliver humanitarian aid in the area. Moges Ambara, deputy head of political affairs for Fano Forces – Rebels – in North Wollo, told Anchor Media this week that they are ready to cooperate for the humanitarian delivery work in the area.
