Toronto – Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) on Saturday reported that there were two grenade explostions in the capital Addis Ababa, targeting two ruling Prosperity Party offices.

At this writing, no other Ethiopain news outlet reported about it. Addis Ababa Police and Federal police have not remarked about it either.

According to EMS, the incident happened near Meskel Flower and Awraris, in Bole Sub-city, of the capital Addis Abeba.

While the ruling party memers who were present nearby the offices during the explosion are said to be injured, EMS unspecified the numbers or severity of the injury.

The source also said that an arrest was made ; some members of the ruling party and police officers.

An entity that calls itself “Arada Mehaberai Nekenake” ( Arara Social Movement) has taken responsibility for it. EMS also said that Fano intelligence in the city was part of it.

However, there is no remark from any one of the Fano groups operating in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

Bahir Dar

Meanwhile, there was also a reported grenade explosion in Bahir Dar City – seat of the Amhara regional state.

According to EMS, it happened on Saturday around 2 p.m. local time and it was thrown into the premises of the region’s police commission.

There are no reported casuality from the incident. But vehicles that were parked in the premises are said to be damaged ; EMS did not specify the number.

The city experienced what looks like a strike on Friday. Mobility of vehicles was restricted and stores were closed. Initially, the regional administration linked the development to what it called a rumor that was circulating that Fano forces would control the city. But later, it was established that the development was rather linked to a planned strike to support the Fano movement.

There have been recurring grenade explosions in Bahir Dar in the past few months.

  1. Grenades used at targets nearby civilian quarters is nothing but terrorism. It will strike fears not at the designated opponent but innocent civilians. Whoever is lobbing grenades in cities and villages qualifies the perpetrator to be designated as a terrorist outfit. This is not a ‘liberation’ act but terrorizing civilians, quite that simple that none of us peace mongers should condone. No, no! It is not only wrong but also criminal.

  2. The failed attempt of Fano to wage war within their own hometowns highlights the contradictory and self-destructive nature of their actions. How can one claim to be advancing and capturing their own land, causing harm to the very communities they profess to protect? The reported grenade explosions in Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar are desperate acts that only further alienate these groups from the broader population.

Targeting public spaces, party offices, and local police stations with violence only undermines the stability and security of the regions they claim to defend. These acts of terror, whether in the capital or the heart of Amhara, reveal a lack of coherent strategy and a disregard for the well-being of innocent civilians. The irony here is stark: they aim to “capture” areas that are inherently their own, resulting in nothing but destruction and suffering for their own people.

The failure of these attempts is a testament to the resilience of the local population and the strength of the nation’s unity. Ethiopia has faced many challenges, but the way forward is not through internal conflict and violence, but through dialogue, understanding, and collective progress. The focus should be on building, not tearing down; on advancing together, not regressing through division and destruction.
