Toronto – Fighting between Fano and government forces in the Dembecha-Gojjam area of the Amhara region reportedly continues into its tenth day.
According to sources, the clashes are taking place outside the town and in the surrounding hills.
Casualties unspecified on both sides. However, Fano forces have confirmed that the conflict in the area is ongoing.
There have been several intense battles between the two forces in Dembecha at different times since the federal government declared war in the region in August 2023 under the stated mission of “disarming fano forces.”
Similarly, intense fighting is reported in Debre Elias, also in Gojjam. This battle has been ongoing for more than four days, according to Ethio News, a reliable news outlet with sources from the area.
Further north in the Amhara region, Fano forces in the South Gondar-Estie area on Wednesday reported significant gains against government forces. The battle was fought on Tuesday and Wednesday near the Shoklet area between Semada and Estie, as reported by Ethiopian Media Services, which spoke with Shaleka Birara Demissie, commander of the Guna Brigade of Fano forces.
“Two ambulances of dead bodies” have been collected from government forces, according to the commander. He also noted that his forces have captured three wounded government soldiers.
In the Shewa area in central Ethiopia, the government reportedly deployed forces to the Minjar-Shenkora area with a mission to capture, according to local news sources, leaders of Fano forces in the area. However, Fano forces claim the government forces suffered losses, though no specific casualty figures were provided, including those from Fano’s side.
The Ethiopian government has not commented on any of these developments. Instead, it claimed that “Fano forces are surrendering in Shoa and Gondar.” This claim was rejected by Fano forces, who accused the government of disarming individual farmers and coercing them into giving interviews to state media, falsely confessing they had abandoned Fano and “returned to peaceful lives.”
Despite the government’s claims, credible sources like Ethio News report that most areas, particularly rural parts of the Amhara region, remain under Fano forces’ control.
Meanwhile, a police commander from one of the divisions in Bahir Dar, the seat of the Amhara regional state, has reportedly been killed. Fano took the responsibility. The Amhara regional state has neither confirmed nor denied the report.
