Toronto – The Ethiopian government arrested poet and producer of Tobiya Poetic Jazz producer Misrak Terefe. She was arrested on Friday in the afternoon in the capital Addis Ababa, social media sources close to her reported.
Addis Ababa Police are behind the arrest. She is currently arrested at the third division of Addis Ababa Police Commission.
Misrak is prominent for her poems and is also celebrated for producing a popular Poetic Jazz show that has been popular for several years now.
Police did not explain why they arrested her. However, friends who happened to visit her at the police station stated that she was arrested in connection with her poetry work related to the Adwa Victory which was published and circulated over a year ago. Her work was first featured at the Intercontinental Hotel in Addis Ababa over a year ago.
Wosenseged Gebrekidan, a journalist, has visited her in prison. Ethiopian Media Services cited him as saying that Misark has told him that police have interrogated her in connection with her poetry work which was featured on Arts TV and recently circulating in social media. Details of what exactly she was asked about it is unspecified.
Why now? According to sources, the poem was recently highly circulating again on social media. The ruling party, reminiscent of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) ethnic political ideology, seems to have problems with Ethiopia’s past. It has a history of arresting citizens hoisting Ethiopia’s revered flag that is mostly seen as part of Ethiopia’s long struggle for its independence for centuries.
Local news sources reported that Misrak appeared at the Federal First Instance Court in the capital. Court granted police seven days “to complete investigation,” and Misrak was taken back to Addis Ababa Police Commission.
Her arrest came at a time when the ruling party is undertaking its Second Congress – during which the prime minister claimed that his government “did not torture in the past six years; not even a single case,” as he put it. His remark has triggered widespread criticism in light of recurring unlawful arrests, extrajudicial executions and even brutal political assassinations as seen in the case of Bete Urgessa.
News of her arrest is trending among Ethiopians on social media and draws widespread criticism against Abiy Ahmed’s government.
