Toronto – Ethio Fano – a new Fano movement – reportedly started operation in South Ethiopia just a month or so after the announcement of Wollega Fano as the first Fano group outside of the Amhara region.
Local Ethiopian Sources on Tuesday reported that Ethio-Fano has already started battling government forces in the region. It is currently operating in South and South West Ethiopia.
According to Ethio Focus news , the group justified its armed struggle due to what worsening oppression of people in the region and the expansionist agenda of what they call OPDO (Oromo People’s Democratic Organization) – a defunct organization whose leaders, including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, are dominating what became the Prosperity Party – the ruling party in the country.
There had been reports of instability in 2024 in south Ethiopia for several weeks due to administrative arrangement rejecting one that was imposed by the government and also due to a reported expansion of Oromia region to the area including to Neche Sar National park.
Similarly, there had been a recurring security crisis – including killings and kidnapping – in the Guraghe zone of South Ethiopia. There were also several instances when youth from the region had been missing for unknown reasons. Politicians from the region had been linking the problem to the government. Now this area is part of the region where the new Ethio Fano group is operating.
The new Fano group has a distinct character in terms of composition compared to the one operating the Amhara region of Ethiopia ; it is a multi-ethnic Fano organization.
Amhara Fano in Gojjam on Tuesday released a statement congratulating Ethio Fano and made a call for different language speaking groups in Ethiopia to join and support the Fano group to end Abiy Ahmed’s government which it called “Chefchafi” denoting the various massacres government forces unleashed in different parts of Ethiopia. Fano Asres Mare, Head of the Political division of Gojjam Fano, shared the statement on his social media page.
Ethiopia’s Federal Government Ministry of Communication Services nor the South Ethiopia regional state remarked about the development at the time of this writing.
