Addis Ababa, Ethiopia-Family members of two imprisoned Ethiopian politicians, Christian Tadelle, a member of the House of People’s Representatives, and Yohannes Boyalew, a member of the Amhara Regional Council, have reported that both are suffering from severe health complications. Speaking to the BBC, they disclosed that both men are facing persistent bleeding after undergoing surgical procedures.
The families, who requested anonymity, revealed that the politicians were returned to the detention center, Kaliti Correctional Facility, shortly after their surgeries despite medical advice recommending extended hospital care. According to their statements, the two were transported back to the detention center under harsh conditions and denied adequate post-surgical care.
A family member of Christian stated, “He continues to bleed and is in critical condition. Doctors had warned that such complications could arise and advised immediate hospitalization if they occurred, but this has not been done.”
Similarly, a relative of Yohannes expressed frustration, recounting that their attempts to provide necessary medical supplies and food were denied. “When we arrived yesterday with medicine and food, we were told we couldn’t deliver them because they were being moved. However, they did not inform us where they were being taken,” the family member said.
The Federal Correctional Services Commission had announced last week that it would be transferring inmates from the Kaliti Correctional Facility to a new facility commonly known as “Aba Samuel.” Families have raised concerns about the well-being of the detained politicians during this transfer process and the overall conditions in detention.
Their lawyer, Solomon Gezahagne, also confirmed that the surgeries occurred approximately two weeks ago but reiterated that adequate post-operative care had not been provided. Family members added that the medications required to manage their conditions have run out, and both detainees are in dire need of urgent medical attention.
This situation has raised serious concerns about the treatment of political prisoners and their access to necessary healthcare. Family members have called for immediate action to ensure the politicians receive the medical care they require.
The individuals in question were arrested during a six-month state of emergency declared in the Amhara region, which was implemented on August 4, 2023. This declaration followed escalating clashes between the federal government and the Fano militia, a local armed group. Authorities have accused those detained of “carrying out various illegal activities” in urban areas and “providing logistical and financial support” to the militia.
As the initial state of emergency period neared its expiration, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) urged for the “continued release of individuals” who had been imprisoned under this decree. The parliament subsequently extended the state of emergency by an additional four months on February 2, 2024, reflecting ongoing tensions and security concerns in the region.
