Toronto – The Global Society of Tigray Scholars and Professionals (GSTS) has written a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to focus on the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and address the ongoing situation in the Tigray region and Ethiopia at large.
The organization shared a copy of the letter on its social media page on February 8. In the letter, GSTS called on President Trump to “bring his attention to the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) and the Nairobi Executive Declaration between the Federal Government of the Republic of Ethiopia and the authorities of the Tigray Region of Ethiopia, ensuring their swift and full implementation.”
GSTS emphasized that such action is critical to addressing the “ongoing humanitarian emergency crisis in the Tigray region of Ethiopia” and to mitigating broader security challenges in the Horn of Africa.
The society also demanded the withdrawal of all forces from the region except for the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF). Specifically, it called for the removal of Amhara and Eritrean forces from Tigray. Additionally, GSTS requested support for the Tigray Interim Administration.

The Pretoria Agreement, which ended the bloody two-year war in November 2022, is estimated to have claimed over one million lives across the Afar, Amhara, and Tigray regions of Ethiopia (Borkena). Despite the agreement, fears of renewed conflict in the region persist.
The Tense Security Situation in Tigray
The Tigray region has been grappling with a security crisis and political tensions following an internal rift within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). This division has led to a full-fledged split, resulting in two rival factions.
One faction is led by Getachew Reda, whom the Federal Government appointed as President of the Interim Administration shortly after the Pretoria Agreement. The other faction is led by Debretsion Gebremichael, a veteran TPLF guerrilla fighter and former president of the Tigray Regional Administration.
In August 2024, Debretsion’s faction held what it termed the 14th TPLF Party Congress, during which he was re-elected as Party Chairman. However, the other faction, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia, and the Federal Government did not recognize the congress as legitimate.
Over the past few months, the two factions have exchanged accusations on various issues, including the legitimacy of the current Interim Administration. Reports suggest that the armed group in the region, known as the “Tigray Defense Force,” has also split. One segment supports the Debretsion faction, while the other backs the Interim Administration
Earlier this week, Getachew Reda warned that war could erupt at any moment.. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called on the region’s elites to resolve their differences peacefully. However, skepticism remains widespread, with many interpreting the Prime Minister’s message as a precursor to a potential military operation in the region And people in the region do not appear to be in a condition to shoulder another conflict, which would cripple the region further. Another letter emphasizing the ongoing plight and suffering of Amharas at the hands of Abiy Ahmed should be submitted to President of the United States Donald Trump, with the evident goal of putting an end to this massacre and pressing Abiy Ahmed to resign and face justice. Ethiopians are fed up with hearing about so-called victories of Fannos, TDF, and the casualties of Ethiopian military troops or any fellow Ethiopian. Other than those warmongers, Ethiopians want peace, not feats achieved by civil conflict. Abiy Ahmed should step down. Ethiopia has not been invaded by foreign enemies, but its revered people have been subjected to unending atrocities throughout its territory as a result of the actions of cruel demagogue leaders who have no mercy for their own citizens.
