Ethiopian government is already at war with two rebels groups in the Amhara and Oromia regions

Toronto – As tension in the Tigray region of Ethiopia escalates, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed released a lengthy letter on Monday calling for a peaceful resolution of the tension in the region “in a way that maintains the unity of people in the region”
The PM wrote his message in the Tigrigna language and shared it on his own social media page. State owned media outlets gave his open letter wide coverage.
In the letter, the prime minister highlighted the historical contribution of people in the Tigray region of Ethiopia in the formation of the Ethiopian state and the struggle to maintain the independence of Ethiopia.
“The people of Tigray are peace-loving, hardworking and love their country,” the prime minister wrote, as translated by state-owned media.
He also praised the sacrifice made by the people in the Tigray region to defend Ethiopia throughout history.
For the elites in the region, he posed a question. ” Do the losses or the gains outweigh the wars people in the region fought over the past one hundred years -whatever their cause was.” He went on to advise the elites to resolve differences through dialogue.
Regarding disputes with the Federal government and the Amhara region (which he referred to as another region ), he emphasized resolving them in accordance with the constitution.
His message comes at a time when the TPLF faction under Debretsion Gebremicael is reportedly moving a considerable number of what has been described as “Tigray Defense Force” in the west and south directions of the region signaling that they are about to start a war.
Banks in the region were reportedly crowded in the past few weeks as residents rushed to withdraw cash fearing that war could break out again.
However, the imminent war seems to be between the two factions of the TPLF as their differences are also reflected in the military generals and the forces in the region. Now, it appears that the Debretsion faction is actually going to war with the aim of reclaiming Wolkait and Raya – areas that the TPLF incorporated into the Tigray region after taking central government power in 1991.
Meanwhile, Debretsion’s faction has reportedly ordered people in the region to contribute rations to the army – another sign that his group is preparing for war.
Tigray regional state under Debretsion Gebremicael fought a bloody war against Abiy Ahmed between November 2020 and November 2022. It is said to have claimed an estimated 1 million lives including in the Afar and Amhara regions.

The people of Tigray demand independence and restoration of their ancient statehood for their secuirity and peace. It time for Finfine and Makelle to initiate negotaions for a peaceful transition to independence without any delay and execuses. The regional power Tigray will play a positive role in Ethiopia and will defend Oromia as its gift to the Oromo people.
