Abiy Ahmed still facing criticism from across Ethiopia.

Toronto – The Second Congress of the Prosperity Party has reelected Abiy Ahmed as President of the Party. Although it was expected that Abiy would be elected again an electronic vote was administered outside of where the congress was going on.
The party has announced that Abiy Ahmed got a “very high number of votes.” He took an oath in front of the Party Congress.
Temesgen Tiruneh and Adem Farah are elected as deputy presidents of the party.
The Party has been undertaking its congress for the past two days in the capital Addis Ababa. The party is now claiming to have 15.7 million members across the country.
The ruling party has been claiming that it is taking Ethiopia on a path to prosperity and considers itself as a “party with ideas to transform Ethiopia.”
In his speech during the first day of the congress, Abiy Ahmed denigrated opposition parties indirectly that his party is open for ideas if there are any with ideas.
On the other hand, the country saw an unprecedented war under his leadership. The war in Tigray is said to have claimed over one million people.
The level of poverty in the country has been worsening following the further devaluation of the Ethiopian birr in July 2024 which was introduced as part of macro-economic reform within the framework of “homegrown economic growth.” However, It appears that the IMF presented the depreciation of the Ethiopian currency as one of the conditions to release $10.7 billion credit over several years.
The ruling Prosperity party has lost support and legitimacy. There is ongoing armed struggle in the country’s two largest regions – Oromia and Amhara regions. Fears are also high that war could break out anytime in the Tigray region of Ethiopia as well.
In terms of foreign policy, Abiy’s leadership is widely regarded as a disaster. A near war like situation was avoided with Somalia. The relation with Eritrea is now hostile and there are fears that it could lead to war.

“Sunday evening, before the X Spaces conversation, when asked for comment on USAID, Trump told reporters: “It’s been run by a bunch of radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out, and then we’ll make a decision” on its future.
Musk said USAID is “beyond repair,” among other attacks he made against the agency created by Congress as an independent body.
We don’t have “an apple with a worm in it,” he said. “We have a ball of worms.”
“USAID is a ball of worms.”
USAID is a key soft power tool of the US to foster relations with communities around the world, officials say, noting that US national security is approached with the “three D” pillars: defense, diplomacy and development, led, respectively, by the Defense Department, State Department and USAID.
“Time for it to die,” he posted on X.
Trump ordered strikes in his first term, despite pulling troops out in the eleventh hour of his presidency. Biden reversed that decision when he took over in 2021 in order to keep a continuous US presence. So far in his second term, Trump has kept troops there.
But it is likely he may eventually take a different approach, not just on Somalia but the African continent as a whole. His former defence secretary, Mark Esper, said in his memoir that Trump “didn’t see much value” in having any Americans – military personnel or diplomats – anywhere on the continent. ” BBC CNN(Control + C , Control + V )
