Toronto – Benalf Andualem, Former Minister For Peace, is named as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United States. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia on Friday announced that Benalf “has received his letter of appointment from the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Taye Atske-Selassie. “
Gedion Timotheos, Minister for Foreign Affairs, is cited as saying that “Binalf is tasked with the efforts of further strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries.”
Benalf was quietly removed as Minister of Peace, theoretically one of the most powerful ministries, in December 2024. His removal was indirectly announced when Abiy Ahmed’s office announced the appointment of Mohamed Idris as the new minister for peace. It was reported at the time that Benalf was appointed to an Ambassadorial position but the country to which was assigned as an Ambassador was undisclosed.
Benalf did not have any experience in the world of diplomacy and observers are questioning as to what the motive of Abiy Ahmed is in appointing him as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United States at a time when the U.S. foreign policy is poised to be Trampified.
Ethiopia’s ruling party, over the past thirty years, has a customary practice of appointing party officials to Ambassadorial positions whenever a politician fell out with the leaders and whenever a politician is no longer needed to be in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia and the United States have over 120 years of diplomatic relations.
