Toronto – The Ethiopian Parliament on Thursday named Berhanu Adelo as the new Commissioner for Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRCO).
Before his new role, he has served as the Executive Committee of the now defunct Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and Minister in Charge of Cabinet Affairs, among other roles.
Daniel Bekele ended his term of office as Commissioner in July 2024. Rakeb Messele has been serving as Acting Chief Commissioner since then.
Critics, as activists and politicians manifested in social media conversations, tend to see the appointment of Berhanu Adelo as an indication that Abiy Ahmed’s government has intention to deepen human rights violations.
The government has been accused in connection with worsening rights abuse, in conflict zones like Amhara and Oromia, including extrajudicial executions.
