Toronto – Kristalina Georgieva is scheduled to visit Ethiopia on February 8 and 9, 2025.

She will be meeting with senior government officials including Abiy Ahmed.

The IMF has pledged a US$ 10.7 billion package to finance what it calls “Ethiopia’s homegrown growth.” This month it released $248 million after reviewing the implementation of the reform measure Abiy Ahmed’s government introduced – including devaluation of the Ethiopian birr – in July 2024.

The Ministry of Finance sees the IMF Director’s visit as a manifestation of “IMF’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s economic development and fostering dialogue on policies aimed at ensuring resilience, and shared and lasting prosperity.”

The Statement from Ministry of Finance reads as follows :

“IMF Managing Director to Visit Ethiopia for High-Level Engagements

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, will undertake an official visit to Ethiopia for two days (February 8, and February 9, 2025) to engage in high-level discussions with the country’s leadership and key stakeholders. This will mark the Managing Director’s first visit in Ethiopia after her appointment in 2019.

During the visit, the Managing Director will meet with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and senior government officials to discuss Ethiopia’s economic outlook, policy priorities, and ongoing reforms. The visit will also include interactions with representatives from the private sector, to exchange perspectives on the business environment and economic opportunities in Ethiopia. In addition to these engagements, the Managing Director will visit social and development sites.

This visit reaffirms the IMF’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s economic development and fostering dialogue on policies aimed at ensuring resilience, and shared and lasting prosperity.”
