Toronto – News of what is described as “discussion” between Amhara Fano Popular Organization (AFPO) and international organizations – particularly the African Union and IGAD – made headlines in Ethiopian news outlets over the past few days.
Andargachew Tsege had an interview with Anchor Media and shared his critical assessment of not only the “discussion” but also other developments which he thought would put ethnic Amhara to danger – military and political.
He started his analysis with the discussion of power politics highlighting the situation on the ground and what it means to the Fano struggle and the Amhara people.
He emphasized the crucial importance of a strong military power even in the context of negotiation and settlement. He sees a danger in a subtle distraction that aims to compromise a strong military power of the Fano. “The very reason that Amhara became a target for attack for a long time was because of military weakness as Amhara was not organized in that way”
He also boldly stated about the danger of faction-based negotiation. Acknowledging the explanation from AFPO that what happened was “discussion,” he argued that even this process has a potential to create mistrust and suspicion among other Fano forces. He strongly argued that working on a single Fano structure should have been a priority.
While he sees a military potential in the Fano struggle in view of where it is now in a span of less than two years, he sees a danger from the trajectory of emerging developments in the region including in the Tigray of Ethiopia. He sees the importance of transforming the potential military power of Fano into an actual one by uniting the force. If that is not happening, he seems to see the danger that Fano would be relegated to a junior partner status to emerging forces , and that could have a detrimental effect on the Amhara.
He also remarked on the alleged move for negotiation between AFPO and the government. If negotiation is happening, we are entering into a bigger challenge that will pose a great danger to the Amhara.
