Toronto – Intense fighting has been reported in the Ambassel mountain area of South Wollo, in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. The conflict has spread across a wide area, prompting the Ethiopian Defense Force to deploy mechanized units to multiple locations in the area.
The clashes, which have now persisted for two days, have reportedly resulted in significant military gains for Fano forces. According to sources, an unspecified number of government heavy artillery units have been destroyed. However, the exact number of casualties on both sides remains unclear.
This development suggests a resurgence in Fano forces’ advances, as the fighting had previously been concentrated in North Wollo for many months now.
The Ethiopian government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the situation.
Sources informed Borkena that transportation between Dessie and Wogel Tena has been disrupted. While Fano forces have not imposed formal restrictions, transport operators appear to have suspended services for safety reasons.
Additionally, battles have been reported further south near Kombolcha and Worebabo, where government forces reportedly suffered losses. In the South West Wollo area, specifically in Amhara Saynet, government forces were unable to gain control. Fano forces claim to have taken control of Bokeksa town in the same area.
In Gojjam, clashes erupted near Dima Giorgis. According to Ethio News, Fano forces gained the upper hand in the fighting, prompting the government to send reinforcements. Reports also allege that government forces resorted to targeting civilian with heavy artillery and the looting of residential homes.
In Northern Gondar, fighting continues as government forces attempt once again to secure the corridor to the Ethio-Sudan border—a mission that has proven challenging.
Fano forces reportedly maintain control over 80 percent of the Amhara region. This week, the Amhara Regional Administration disclosed that it has been unable to collect 50 billion birr in taxes due to the ongoing conflict in the region.
