Sudan has reportedly opposed the humanitarian initiative organized in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Borkena
Toronto – Humanitarian organizations, such as OCHA, have reported that over 15 million Ethiopians across the country require emergency humanitarian assistance due to drought and the impacts of war. The report dates back to 2024.
Today, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced a $15 million humanitarian aid package to Sudan. “Ethiopia will continue to support the people of Sudan in all areas,” state media cited Abiy Ahmed as saying.
He made the announcement during a conference organized at the UN Africa Economic Commission in Addis Ababa, entitled “High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan.” According to Ethiopian state media outlets, the conference is a joint initiative by Ethiopia, the UAE, the African Union, and IGAD. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is currently in Addis Ababa for the 38th African Union Heads of States Summit, attended the conference. During the event, the UAE announced $200 million in humanitarian aid to support Sudan.
However, Sudan has accused the UAE of playing a role in the ongoing conflict and has opposed the humanitarian aid initiative organized in Addis Ababa, according to reports from local media.
The conference aims to “end the conflict in Sudan,” with the immediate goal of securing a ceasefire during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
“Ethiopia, at this difficult time, stands with the people of Sudan. It will continue to provide humanitarian support in all its capacity,” Abiy Ahmed said.
The announcement has drawn criticism from Ethiopian activists on social media and opposition politicians. Ethiopia emerged from a devastating conflict in the north, which is reported to have resulted in over one million casualties.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia is grappling with an ongoing conflict in the Amhara region. This week, the Amhara regional state disclosed that it was unable to collect 50 billion birr in revenue due to the ongoing war. Reports indicate that over 80 percent of the region is under the control of the rebel group Fano. Recent accounts also highlight instances of famine-related deaths in the region particularly in Bugna – North Wollo.
There is no indication as to whether a parliamentary process was followed to approve the $15 million humanitarian aid to Sudan.
