Toronto – Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, confirmed to journalists in Addis Ababa that the airline had received a directive prohibiting Lidetu from entering the country, and his ticket was consequently blocked.

The CEO emphasized that Ethiopian Airlines adheres to the laws and regulations of the countries it operates in and out of.

Lidetu Ayalew, however, argued that neither the Ethiopian government nor Ethiopian Airlines has the right to deny him the ability to return to Ethiopia. “The conventions Ethiopia has signed and Ethiopian constitution, do not permit such actions,” he stated.

Lidetu had initially planned to purchase tickets from other airlines after he was denied flying Ethiopian Airlines. However, he learned from his sources that the Ethiopian government requires carriers to disclose passenger names three days before flying to Ethiopia.

Lidetu also claims to have information that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed personally vowed, “The person called Lidetu will never enter this country.”

He views this action as “tantamount to stripping him of his citizenship” and considers it “a crime.” Lidetu expected to be arrested upon arrival at Bole International Airport but did not expect that he would be denied entry.

The Ethiopian passport Lidetu holds has eleven months before expiration. He had purchased a one-way ticket to Ethiopia for the February 11 Ethiopian Airlines flight bound for Addis Ababa.

Lidetu attempted to contact the Ethiopian Embassy in the U.S. by phone but found no options available for cases like his. He now feels like a stateless individual.

As of now, the Ethiopian government and law enforcement authorities have not commented on why Lidetu was denied entry into Ethiopia.

  1. These conniving Diaspora media outlets set this man up to make him speak what they want to hear and what will best sell for them and now he ended up a person with out a country. The bigoted connivers got their money and he ended up holding the bag. There is nothing the airline can do about it. The government there banished him and the airline folks have to go by the law of the land just like they do in any country they fly to. Every other airline has the same policy too.

On the other hand, it shows how the regime over there is feeling these days. It looks it feels besieged and it is going to the distant of banishing a citizen like this man. That is not a good sign. In a situation where there is no one other strong and unified opposition party inside the country ready the pick up the baton, this may spell a disaster for the country and its people. May The Almighty Save That Gem of The Colored and Its Noble People!!!
