Toronto – Legesse Seyoum, commander of the Sululta district police, was reportedly killed on Tuesday morning. His escorts were also reportedly killed in the attack. Those accompanying him were from the Oromia Regional State Police and the Ethiopian Defense Force.

Sululta is located just 54 kilometers north of the capital, Addis Ababa.

The district’s ruling Prosperity Party (PP) head, Sisay Beshada, was wounded in the attack and taken to the hospital. It is not specified whether his condition is life-threatening.

The attack occurred barely a week after the Oromia Regional State announced that it had reached a “peace deal” with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) under the leadership of Jal Segni. However, another faction of the organization dismissed the agreement as “farcical,” arguing that the OLA officials with whom the government signed the agreement had been dismissed from the organization for “actively working to weaken the group.”

OLA Takes Responsibility for Sululta Attack

The OLA faction still resisting the government militarily confirmed the killing of government officials in Sululta and claimed responsibility for the attack.

In an update shared on social media, the OLA stated, “Units of the OLA’s Central Command executed a surgical operation today in Caancoo Rob Gabiya, located in Sululta, North Shewa.”

The police commander and his escorts were reportedly traveling in a patrol pickup when they were ambushed by OLA gunmen.

“The targeted patrol vehicle was neutralized during the operation, leading to the elimination of Commander Legesse Seyoum, head of police in the district, and his security detail, composed of members from the ENDF and Oromia Police,” the OLA said in a brief update on its social media page.

According to a Wazema Radio report, it appears the OLA lured the police commander and officials into a trap. The OLA gunmen reportedly informed the commander and officials that they had accepted the government’s call to lay down arms. Trusting this information, the police commander and officials headed to Rob Gebeya apparently to greet the OLA force who announced plans to lay arms.  However, the rebel gunmen ambushed their vehicle and opened fire.

Furthermore, the OLA statement added, “Both Legesse Seyoum and Sisay Beshada have been playing key roles in orchestrating military campaigns against the OLA and perpetrating acts of aggression against Oromo civilians.”

Ethiopia’s Federal Police has yet to comment on the latest security incident.

Who is the OLA?

The group that calls itself the Oromo Liberation Army is a radical ethnic Oromo nationalist group and has been linked to the killings of tens of thousands of civilians in the Oromia region of Ethiopia and to recurring abductions in the region. It was formed after Abiy Ahmed became Prime Minister in 2018. Initially part of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), the group declined to disarm when Abiy invited all armed groups to return to Ethiopia. This refusal led to a split, with the political wing of the OLF distancing itself from the military faction, which later officially adopted the name Oromo Liberation Army.
