Toronto – In a tragic recurrence, at least 11 people have lost their lives in the latest Ethiopia landslide in South Ethiopia Regional State. The disaster struck the Kawo Koisha district of the Wolaita zone, Teba kebele, at around 11 a.m.
The South Ethiopia Regional Government Communication Affairs Bureau confirmed the incident, warning that the number of casualties could rise as search operations continue.
The regional government expressed its condolences and called for people in the region to exercise “high caution” in light of the recurring landslides.
Tilahun Kebede, president of the region, urged “people living in areas vulnerable to landslides to exercise caution.”
There have been recurring incidents of landslides in the region that have claimed hundreds of lives.
However, there is no indication (it has not been reported) if the government has initiated a scientific study to identify parts of the region vulnerable to landslides and evacuate them.
As of this writing, it is unclear if the government is coordinating evacuations from the areas already identified as vulnerable to landslides.
South Ethiopia is one of the areas that received heavy rainfall during the season Ethiopians call “Kiremt” – the months of June, July, and August.
Last month, more than 260 people were killed in a devastating landslide in the Gamo region of South Ethiopia from which people in the region have not recovered and the humanitarian efforts for those displaced is still underway.
