Toronto – Oromo Liberation Army forces, who reportedly made a “peace deal” with the government, have allegedly caused chaos in the capital, Addis Ababa. The incident took place on Sunday, with a civilian woman reportedly killed.

The combatants were firing into the air and, in some places, even throwing hand grenades in parts of the city. For many residents of Addis Ababa, it was a confusing and frightening experience. Activists and political analysts speculate that the incident was deliberately orchestrated to instill fear in the capital.

These armed groups were reportedly heading to “rehabilitation and training centers.” Video footage that emerged on social media shows the OLA combatants firing guns from a moving bus.

Why thousands of forces, who reportedly agreed to lay down their arms, were allowed to enter the city while armed remains unclear.

Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice Party (EZEMA)—an opposition party often criticized for failing to fulfill its role and instead acting as a public relations arm for the Ethiopian Prime Minister and his ruling Prosperity Party—is raising questions this time.

The party has demanded the government provide a clear explanation about the gunfire in the capital. It also urged the government to disclose the details of the peace agreement reached with one faction of the Oromo Liberation Army.

Addis Ababa Police Explanation

Following the intense gunfire on Sunday, the city’s police released a brief statement, saying, “The gunfire was from former OLF gunmen who accepted the government call for peace and were heading to rehabilitation and training centers.”

The statement neither confirmed nor denied the reported death of a woman in the Megenagna area.

It also did not clarify why “former gunmen” heading to training and rehabilitation centers were allowed to carry arms and disrupt one of Africa’s leading diplomatic hubs with gunfire.

“We apologize for the shock and disturbance created, and we would like to announce that serious cautionary measures will be taken to ensure similar problems do not occur,” the Addis Ababa police said in the statement.

However, from social media conversations, many activists appear skeptical of the explanation. Instead, many believe the incident was deliberately planned to intimidate the residents of Addis Ababa.

  1. The regional power Tigray is an island of security and stability after driving out government forces out of its sovereign territory. The withdrawal of Tigray defence force (TDF) from the gates of Finfine under international pressure has created a situation where Amhara forces began attacking government army.
