Toronto – Eritrean Opposition groups are now openly organizing in Ethiopia. On Monday, two major Eritrean opposition groups held a meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
Brigade Nehamdu and Eritrea Afar National Congress (EANC) were part of the meeting. DW Amharic cited Yesuf Abdella, executive member of EANC, to report that over 2000 Eritrean attended the meeting.
According to source, Brigade Nehamdu , which is reportedly planning the Blue revolution in Eritrea with the aim to topple President Isaias Afeworki’s government is the organizer of the meeting with logistical support from the Ethiopian government. The Eritrean government used to support Ethiopian rebels militarily when the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was in control of the central government.
Eritrean government supporters claim Brigade Nehamdu is mostly composed of Ethnic Tigrans from the Tigray region of Ethiopia. The group is linked to several incidents of violence in many cities in Europe, Middle East and North America.
Yesuf Abdella, EANC, accused Eritrean government of oppressing the Afar in Eritrea. He projects an image that the struggle is for a decentralized government in the image of Ethiopian ethnic politics based form of government.
Asked how the opportunity to arrange a meeting in Addis was made possible, Yesuf responded “the opportunity was available, and we seized it and held the discussion.” He gave no further detail as to how the arrangement was made.
Clearly, this would not have been possible without the permission of Abiy Ahmed’s government. The meeting is seen as another confirmation that the tense relation between Ethiopia and Eritrea is beyond a point of repair.
The relation between the two countries deteriorated following the Pretoria Agreement that ended the two years war between the TPLF led Tigray regional government and Abiy Ahmed’s government.
After Ethiopia and Eritrea ended their two decades of no-war-no-peace relation in 2018, Ethiopian Airlines has been conducting up to 15 weekly flights to Asmara. Now it is completely suspended and the phone line between the two countries is also disconnected.
There are unconfirmed reports that the faction of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) that is under the leadership of Debretsion Gebremichael has formed an alliance with the Eritrean government.
At the time of this writing, the Eritrean government has not remarked about the meeting that took place in Addis Ababa. There have been reports in the past few months that the Ethiopian government harassed Eritrean refugees in Addis Ababa and other parts of the country.
