Toronto – Eritrea rejects allegations of illegal gold trade smuggled from mining sites in the Tigray region of Ethiopia where there has long been reports off illicit control of the government mining site which turned out to be one of the controversial issues within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) internal divisions that led to the emergence two rival factions.
Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Minister for Information, responded to the allegation in a message he shared on Christmas eve.
His message appears to be targeting Tsadkan Gebretensae, former Defense Chief of Staff of Ethiopia and one of the key figures within the TPLF.
“Disconcerting to see certain/former TPLF elements (Gen. Tsadkan et al) resorting to propagation of abject lies for ulterior objectives,” Yemane said in his message on X (formerly Twitter)
He added “The latest in these series of mendacious news reports is the novel and baseless accusation/insinuation that gold from mining plants in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia is being smuggled illegally through Eritrea!!
Eritrea’s Minister seems to view allegations of illegal gold trade as an effort to incite another conflict in the region.
“Let us emphasize, for the umpteenth time, that the peoples of our region have no apetite for perpetual and costly wars that may be stoked by incorrigible Conflict Enterpreneurs,” he said.
Eritrea was involved in the two years war in Ethiopia between TPLF led Tigray regional state and Abiy Ahmed led Ethiopian Federal Government.
It was fought between November 2020 and November 2022, and is said to have claimed an estimated one million people from the Afar, Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia.
Eritrea has not released information on its losses during the war. It was drawn into the war after TPLF forces reportedly fired more than 70 rockets targeting several locations in Eritrea. At the time, the TPLF was armed with rockets that could hit targets over 300 kilometers.
Former Defense Chief Tsadkan Gebretensae, who reportedly accused Eritrea of trading with illegal gold from Tigray region of Ethiopia, was active in the effort the ease tension between the Federal government and TPLF leaders before the outbreak of the war but was later involved in the war on the part of TPLF as a commander of “Tigray forces” after war broke out in November 2020.
After the end of the war, Tsadkan emerged as a supporter of one of the TPLF factions that seems to be advocating against war. Meanwhile, a faction led by Debretsion Gebremichael is allegedly preparing for another round of war. This faction is also allegedly forming an alliance with the Eritrean government.

Ethiopia must be careful in not provoking the mighty nation of Eritrea. Ethiopia should never forget how Eritrea licked it on the battlefronts during the war of 1998-2000 when the mighty Eritrean army was only 50 miles from Addis/Finfinne. If not the then president of USA begging Al-Toweel Wedi Afo not to enter the capital, Ethiopia could have ended up being one of the administrative regions of Eritrea, Be careful, Ethiopia. If you find a few kilograms of gold missing here and there, so what? Comrade Yemane Gebremeskel is right. Ethiopia, you will not stand a chance. Also remember this clueless Ethiopia! You still owe Eritrea $250 billion US dollars for the wars you waged on Eritrea in 1941 at Keren also in 1952 and 1962 at Calabrese in which you killed 6 million Eritrean citizens.
