Toronto – Ethiopian Athlete Tamrat Tolla wins the Paris Olympic Marathon smashing the Olympic record.

He finished the distance at 2:06:26.

ESPN quoted Tamrat Tolla as saying “”I am happy today because I fulfilled my goal,” Tola said. “I prepared well. I trained hard so I could win. In my life, this is my great achievement.”

Tamrat was not selected to compete at the Paris Marathon. He happened to fill in for Sisay Lemma who was reported to be injured.

As it turns out, Tamrat won not only Ethiopia’s only Gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic but a new Olympic record.

Tamrat was told that he will substitute Sisay only two weeks ago, according to a report from the Olympic.com

Bashir Abdi, who is running for Belgium, finished second  to claim silver and Kenyan athlete Benson Kipruto won the bronze medal.

The 43 years old Ethiopia’s legendary athlete Kenenisa Bekele competed in the race. He completed the distance in 2:12:24 and 39th position.

Eliud Kipchoge dropped out of the race (DNF) for the first time in his history.

  1. I am finally rewarded the biggest gold medal of all today!!! Our son Tamrat bin Tolla showed who the real master is on the field. There were two men crossing the finish line and blasting the ribbon with him. His late uncles Abebe and Mamo were with him once he dashed into leading the rest. I saw them urging, egging and coaching him all the way. I was hearing Abebe telling him not to run but float like my 1960’s Lincoln Continental Convertible. He heeded that. I could hear the ‘Human Steel’ Mamo telling not to look forward but to look down at the lane in front of him and he heeded that. I was like ‘get’em son! Get’em son for me! Get’em! Get’em’!!! With tears flowing from both eyes. It took me hours to recover!!! In addition, my other daughter Naomi bint Girma and teammates got me another gold medal on the soccer field this afternoon. Can’t beat that! I’m good now! I’m good for the next 3 months. Once I fully recovered, it was time for me to dust off my old 1960’s vinyl soul spiritual collection and start spinning ‘Today, I Started Loving You all Over Again’.

    Dear Editors,

I would like to take a moment to thank you profusely for posting this glorious victory on this glorious day. We need something to lighten us up more than ever now since we have been clobbered with one discomforting news after another about the old country that produced us all and that we still hold very close to our hearts.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  2. I was doubly awarded this morning by my two daughters who finished just 3 seconds apart with gold and silver medals in the women’s marathon. Sifan bint Hassan and Tigist bint Assefa have hugged me goodbye with blindingly glittering gold and silver. It is the pudding finish on the cake and I am enjoying every bite of it. I’m good now. I’m good for the next 6 months. Thank you sweethearts!!!

  3. Btw, both Sifan and Tigist had finished the race breaking the Olympics record. What an accomplishment! Ways to go, girls!!!

  4. Meanwhile, I want to congratulate our Somali brothers and sisters for the silver medal won by athlete Bashir Abdi in the men’s marathon at the Paris Olympics. Take a bow hero Bashir bin Abdi!!! You are my hero too just as Hussein Ahmed Salah from Djibouti was in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and the 1985 New York Marathon in !!!

  5. Dear Ittu Aba Farda

You have been awarded a gold medal for your achievement as the greatest commentator of all time (G.O.A.T.). Your remarks are establishing a reputation for attracting millions of readers to this website, fueled by the soul-biting flavor and smoke rising to the pinnacle of the sky and tempting readers hundreds of miles away.
Come and take your gold medal in the following address: The Embassy of Ethiopia in Washington, D.C. located at 3506 International Drive Northwest, Washington, D.C., in the Cleveland Park neighborhood.
Alternatively at 1609 22nd St NW, Washington
    DC 20008

    • I thought you told me that you gonna pick it for me and that was what they told me. I also heard that you had melt my gold medal and sold it in the black market in Merkato, Addis/Finfinne. Expect to hear from my lawyer who is one of these bigots and connivers in Minnesota, Toronto, Michigan, LA, Oslo and Down Under. He hates Ethiopia just like you with a passion. You will never hear from me ever again but my lawyer will call you soon.

  6. The Olympics is over now and the excitement has come to an end. Our athletes from the four Horn of Africa countries have excellent prospects in the next 2028 Olympics scheduled in LA. With sea level altitude, low humidity and dew point, they gonna own the middle and long distance races. They will be masters of the field. Eritrea, you gonna own it! Ethiopia, you gonna own it! Djibouti, you gonna own it! Somalia, you gonna own it!!! Let’s hope and pray that we all will still be around to enjoy the triumphs by our daughters/sons and granddaughters/grandsons! Insha’Allah!!!

  7. The issue of under achieving in the Paris Olympics is not confined to the Ethiopian squad only. It is a continent-wide issue. When you add the hot, high humidity and dew point of summertime in Paris that makes the lower-than-expected results so stark. Africa has a population of more than 1.5 billion people one and half times more than North America and 20 times more than Oceania. Africa’s population is young with about 60% younger than 25 years old. Success in sports demand substantial investments in people, facilities and monetary accommodations. With runaway corruption, there is little left to prop up competitive sports.
