Toronto – Dr. Andualem Dagne, liver and bile duct surgeon, was tragically killed in Bahir Dar. Police in the city were quick to report that “unidentified gunmen” were behind the killing.
However, the Amhara Association of America, an advocacy organization with links to the Amhara region of Ethiopia, released a brief statement on Sunday saying the surgeon was killed by government forces.
“The Amhara Association of America (AAA) has learned that on February 1st, 2025, Oromo Prosperity Party regime forces shot and killed a civilian identified as Dr. Andualem Dagne in Bahir Dar city in the Amhara region of Ethiopia,” it said.
The surgeon was reportedly killed around 7:30 P.M. as he was heading home from Tibebe-Ghion hospital where he was serving as the director of the surgical unit.
Ethiopians in the country and abroad were expressing shock and anger, on social media, after news emerged that government forces were behind the killing.
Bahir Dar University has also issued a statement condemning the killing. There have been similar arbitrary killings of physicians in the Amhara region on alleged grounds that they support Fano forces. In the case of Dr. Andualem, it is not yet established why he was killed.
Hospital staff in Bahir Dar came out en masse to the funeral carrying banners condemning the killing. They expressed concern for the safety of medical doctors in the region which has been a conflict zone for a year and half now.
The body of Dr. Amdualem was laid to rest on Sunday at Medhanialem cemetery in Bahir Dar. He was from the Bure area of Gojjam and is survived by two children.

This is very bad. This is not right! We need to secure the Amhara region.
