Toronto – His Holiness Abune Baslios is enthroned on Sunday as the six Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church in a ceremony at the Re’ese Adbarat Kidist Mariam Church in Asmara.
The church has been under “Akabe Menber” (could translate to attendant to the throne) for three years after the fifth Patriarch of Eritrea Abune Qerlos passed away in December 2022 only after a year or so in the throne.
Eritrea’s Ministry of Information reported that representatives from sister churches Armenia, Egypt, India and Syria have attended the consecration and enthronement ceremony. From Eastern Orthodox Churches, Russia and Greek were in attendance too.
As well, delegates from the World Council of Churches (WCC), the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), and the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in the Great Lakes and Horn of Africa have attended the ceremony.
Representatives from the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church did not attend for unspecified reason. Flight between Eritrea and Ethiopia is suspended after tension developed between President Isaias and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Senior Eritrean government officials including President Isaias Afeworki were present at the ceremony.
The Eritrean Patriarchate was established after the country became independent after a referendum in 1993 following a thirty years war of Independence.
