Rallies for rival groups in Tigray as tension escalates

Tension continues to rise in the Tigray region of Ethiopia

Borkena

Toronto – Rallies were organized on Sunday in several cities in the Tigray region of Ethiopia supporting and opposing rival factions within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) – an organization that ruled Ethiopia for over 27 years.

No security incidents reported at this writing despite rising tension between the factions and their supporters.

The rallies were not unexpected. The Interim administration was discouraging support rallies for the factions within the TPLF. The region’s peace and security office , and communication affairs office announced earlier this week that there are no rallies and “there should not be.”  They happened.

Sources indicated that protests were organized in Adigrat,Adwa, Mekelle, Michewu and  Wukro cities.

While one group of the protestors support a decision from the majority of military leaders  to form a new administration in the region by toppling the Interim administration, the other group supports the Getachew Reda led Interim administration.

On Thursday, most of the military leaders in the region released a statement, after days of meeting in Mekelle, endorsing the Debretsion faction and calling for the formation of a new government in the region. There were reports at the time that at least 14 military leaders walked out of the meeting. Borkena was unable to independently verify that.  The Interim Administration under Getachew Reda called the move a “coup” and vowed that “Tigreans will fight them in any way they chose.” The reaction from the Interim administration came following an emergency meeting hours after the military leaders in the region released the statement.

The faction under Debretsion Gebremichael has been making claims that Getachew Reda and many other members of the interim administration were given the position representing the TPLF and that they should now quit. It argued that “they are no longer members of the TPLF.”  In August 2024, the group under Debretsion organized what it called the 14th party congress ignoring guidelines and bylaws from the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia. It was after the “congress” that this faction announced that it had “dismissed” Getachew Reda and other members of the Interim administration who were representing the TPLF.

The schism within the TPLF is said to be rooted in the Pretoria Agreement, an agreement that ended a devastating two years war between the Federal government and the TPLF lead Tigray regional state. Fear is on the rise in the Tigray region that war could break out again. It is now confirmed that the division within the TPLF has led to division in the “army” in the region. However, there are clear indications that the Federal government would be involved if conflict broke out. The faction under Getachew Reda has the recognition from the Federal government.

  1. Nice one, they must continue fighting the dead TPLF and the remaining residue, Tigray needs freedom from TPLF, but I see no Ethiopian flag used on this event, are they still skeptical that Ethiopia is their country?
