Toronto – Fighting reportedly continued between Fano forces and the Ethiopian Defense Force in different parts of the Amhara region. Ground and air operations have been intensified, according to sources.
Ethio News reported intense fighting in Gojam, Wollo and Gondar areas of the region.
In South Wollo, there was fighting in the Woreilu and Albuko area. However, the number of casualties on both sides is unspecified. In North Wollo, there have been clashes near Kobo and Robit. Earlier this week, Fano forces captured hundreds of government soldiers in Kalim, a purported video of which was trending on social media.
In Giga, Gojjam area, there was intense fighting. According to Ethio News, as many as 200 government soldiers have been killed. The Ethiopian government did not deny it.
Metema and Armachiho in North West Gondar have seen intense fighting for days. Fano forces have made significant military gains but the number is unspecified.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has also increasingly been resorting to operation by mechanized units and drone strikes as government soldiers continue to lose battles, according to sources.
Massacres of civilians have been reported in Durbete area (North Gojam) and Amhachiho (North West Gondar).
In Durbete area, at least 50 civilians are reportedly killed and several others injured, as reported earlier. In the Majero area of Armachiho, 20 civilians were killed and twenty others injured.
One of the major factors for Fano success has been a broad based support it has been enjoying in the region and beyond.
According to activists with close links to the Amhara region and analysts, the Ethiopian government is deliberately targeting civilians in an attempt to put pressure on the people to stop supporting fanos.
Apart from drone strikes and artillery shelling, government forces carried out extrajudicial killings in different parts of the Amhara regions. Hundreds of civilians have been killed.
Also, in the areas where government forces suffer military loss, they allegedly shelled residential areas from outside of the town centers. This has reportedly happened in Gojjam.
In a related development, two young men were reportedly found dead on Friday in Bahir Dar, seat of the Amhara regional government. The bodies were riddled with bullets, according to sources.
After nearly one and half year, there does not seem to be an end in sight to the conflict. Destruction of livelihood, humanitarian, social and economic crisis the war brought has evidently become unbearable to people in the region.
