Toronto – As Ethiopian government “final military operation” in the Amhara region continues to experience setbacks due to recurring battle losses, reports are emerging that the government is planning to arrest a significant number of senior military commanders deployed to the region.
According to Ethio Focus, local Ethiopian news outlet, the arrest that is about to occur is over alleged “inappropriate” handling of the operation against Fano forces in the region.
The defense force and government “media army” on social media have been claiming major gains to the extent that key Fano leaders have been eliminated. However, no audiovisual or other forms of evidence have been released to support the claim.
The names of the military commanders is unspecified. It is, however, clear that the government deployed ethnic Amhara military commanders for its latest operation in the region – which is still underway.
Intensified ground attack and airstrike operation has been underway in the region for several weeks now. However, reports from credible local sources indicate that the victims were mostly civilians.
There is speculation that the government is planning to arrest the commanders in a move to intimidate other commanders to be deployed to the region to be harsh.
Fano forces evidently have a broad based popular support in the region which made the government operation (which is supported by mechanized units of the defense force and air force) futile.
There are views that tend to see orchestrated government attacks against civilians partly as a revenge and partly as an effort to intimidate the people in the region not to support Fano forces.
Meanwhile, a report by Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) indicates that there was a drone attack in Dangela district, which is the latest one. The sources cited residents from the town as saying that it took place on Thursday morning and a school was targeted in the attack. As many as 10 civilians – including Abenet students (students that study Orthodox Church theology) were hurt. The number of deaths is unspecified.
