Toronto – The possibility of war in the Tigray region of Ethiopia is appearing more imminent as military generals leading the “Tigray army” appear to be supporting one faction of the TPLF over the other while rejecting instructions for party congress from National Electoral Board of Ethiopia.

Sources indicated that the military leaders have decided that the interim regional administration has ended its terms and should be replaced by a new administration.

Their decision came after days of what was said to be a closed meeting in Mekelle. They accused that “the Interim Tigray region administration that was formed in accordance with the Pretoria Agreement has not discharged its responsibility properly.”

The generals vehemently criticized that  administration was exploited by “others.” Getachew Reda has been leading the Interim administration since December 2022. It was the federal government that appointed him to lead the interim administration.

The military officials were explicit that leaders and members of the interim administration committed “treason against the people of Tigray” and became instruments for “foreign powers.” However, they did not specify as to who the foreign power was. It did not specify why it said the administration had committed treason.

The Interim Administration has not yet remarked about the decision of the military generals and their accusations of his administration.

The military leaders also said that they support the decision by Debretsion Gebremichal who was reelected as party chairman when the party congress was organized in August 2024. However, the congress does not have a recognition from the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia. The TPLF as an organization is given until February 10 to conduct a party congress or lose its legal status with the  Board – also something the military generals rejected as unacceptable. The party congress held in August 2024 did not follow the required procedures from the electoral board.

Furthermore, the military leaders asserted that the problems in the Tigray region of Ethiopia are not beyond their capacity and rejected what they called “interference” – apparently by the Federal government.

There are unconfirmed reports that 14 senior military officers have walked out of the meeting.

It has been well over six months now since the split within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front came to the surface. The two factions within the organizations have been trading accusations. The interim administration has been accusing the regional other faction under the leadership of Debretsion Gebremichael of obstructing the works of the interim administration.

Clearly, the decision of the military generals including the endorsement of the August 14, 2024 Congress which the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia designated as illegal are prone to bring them in a collision course with the Federal government.

TPLF military generals have been allegedly involved in illegal gold mining and smuggling. The generals reject the accusation. They say if there are those involved in it, they will be held accountable.

On the other hand, there are reports that Tigray is once again experiencing a situation of preparation for war, raising the fear for the possibility of another war – probably soon.  Tigray like Amhara and Afar region has been devastated by the two years war between TPLF led Tigray regional government and the Federal government.  The country has not yet recovered from it and there is a large-scale ongoing war in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Also, there is conflict in the Oromia region.
