Toronto – There are reports that the Eritrean government is expelling the Sudanese Ambassador. Qatari government-affiliated news source,  Al-Sharq, said the Ambassador is given 72 hours to leave the country.

A google translation of the Al-Sharq’s tweet in Arabic reads “Diplomatic sources for Al-Sharq: The Eritrean government expels the Sudanese Chargé d’Affairs, Ambassador Khaled Abbas, and gives him 72 hours to leave its territory.”

The civil war in Sudan – which started in April 2023 – is said to have claimed well over 100,000 lives and displaced millions. The two sides are still fighting.

Eritrea’s Minister for Information has not remarked about it as yet. Also, the story is not reported by other news sources, including the Sudanese ones. However, DW Amharic has reported about it via its Telegram channel.

It is unclear why Eritrea is taking this measure.

Other news sources say Eritrea’s decision came at a time when the Sudanese government and Rapid Support Fort (RSF) leader are preparing to hold a peace conference in Ethiopia with the mediation of Ethiopia, United Arab Emirates and the African Union.

About two weeks ago, Abiy Ahmed met with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan Abdelrahman al-Burhan, President of the Transitional Sovereign Council of the Republic of the Sudan, in Port Sudan.

Eritrea’s relationship with Abiy Ahmed’s administration is severed to the point that the Eritrean government is taking actions that affect Ethiopia as a country.

On Wednesday, the Eritrean government announced that it has suspended all Ethiopian Airlines flights to and from Eritrea as of September 30, 2024 on alleged grounds that Ethiopian Airlines is engaged in “malicious” business practices including theft of passengers’ luggage and price hikes. Eritrea’s announcement came less than a week after Ethiopian Airlines was accused of “removing ” two passengers from a Nairobi bound Ethiopian Airlines plane in Addis Ababa.

  1. Here goes the neighborhood!!! The Horn of Africa is a region that no expert can predict its politics. One is trying to mediate peace between the warring faction in Sudan and the other one is handing out a pink slip and a banishment visa. One is assisting a nation that seceded itself from a union and the other one is fiercely against that even though itself was a result of splitting from a union. It is a weird region where any guess is as good as the other.
