Toronto – Citizens’ reports on social media indicate that the Amhara Fano Popular Organization (AFPO) has been evaluating its six-month organizational performance.

If the reports are true, Eskinder Nega, the founder and leader of the organization, is stepping aside. However, AFPO has not yet confirmed the story.

Some on social media claim that Eskinder stepped aside on his own, while others suggest it was an organizational decision.

Eskinder relocated to the Amhara region from Addis Ababa after persistent abuse from the ruling Prosperity Party. A few months before his departure, he was leading the Balderas Party – a party he co-established to defend the rights of Addis Ababa residents as the ruling party’s oppression intensified. Before Balderas, Eskinder had a long history of activism, for which he was arrested multiple times and spent several years in prison.

He has been in the Amhara region as part of the Fano movement since at least July 2023.

It appears that he had differences with some of the Fano leaders, such as Zemene Kassie, who leads the forces in Gojjam, Amhara region of Ethiopia. As a result, they parted ways.

Eskinder relocated to the Shoa  zone of the Amhara region of Ethiopia, where he announced the formation of the Amhara Fano Popular Organization (AFPO).

There has been controversy since the organization’s formation. The latest criticism was over alleged discussions between AFPO and diplomats from the African Union, European Union, and the United States, among others.

The engagement was seen by other groups and activists as part of a negotiation process with the Ethiopian government. However, AFPO clarified that it was a diplomatic engagement aimed at highlighting the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis in the region and the level of human rights violations.

Social media sources unspecified as to who will take over Eskinder’s position or what his next role will be.

AFPO claims to have Fano forces across the entire Amhara region of Ethiopia and does not see itself as a province-based Fano group. Geta Asrade, the political head of the organization, recently stated that efforts are still underway to work with other Fano forces in other parts of the Amhara region.
