Toronto – A controversy has been going on regarding Amhara Fano Popular Organization’s (AFPO) discussion with diplomats from the African Union, Intergovernmental Development Authority (IGAD), the European Union (EU) and the U.S. government.

The nature of the engagement itself was controversial. While  a considerable number of Fano supporters and Fano groups see the engagement as part of a negotiation process which they consider to be harmful  to the struggle which Fano has been describing as “struggle to reverse existential threat against Amhara.”

AFPO’s leader, Eskinder Nega, described his group’s diplomatic engagement as “discussion” with “a focus on the humanitarian situation in the Amhara region.”  Not too many people bought his explanation.

The controversy is still going on. Now other Fano leaders have started to remark. Asres Mare Damtie, who is the head of political affairs of Gojjam Fano, had an interview with Ethio News. He sees the “discussion” as a betrayal to the Amhara struggle. He argues that if the ongoing armed struggle to rescue the Amhara people fails, the fate of the Amhara people would be even worse.
