Toronto – The Amhara International Alliance (AIA) announced its establishment this week, marking a significant step in mobilizing the global Amhara diaspora to support the ongoing existential struggle of the Amhara community in Ethiopia. Comprising members from diverse geographical locations and political backgrounds, the organization aims to bridge the gap between the Fano movement’s needs and the diaspora’s efforts to provide meaningful support.

The AIA held its inaugural Zoom meeting, which featured prominent figures such as Gedu Andargachew, Ethiopia’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was introduced as an advisor to the Alliance. Other notable participants included Mesfin Aman, a political activist based in Amsterdam, and Michael M. Agonafir, a respected professional, among others. Many journalists also took part in the first meeting.

In its foundational document, the AIA outlined the critical need for its establishment. It emphasized the disparity between the Fano movement’s need and the current level of support from the Amhara diaspora. “The support that the [existential] struggle needs from those in the diaspora is immense,” the AIA stated. The organization aims to address these gaps by creating a structured and sustainable mobilization effort to ensure continuity in supporting the cause.

The AIA identified the root cause of the attacks against the Amhara community as stemming from a long-standing anti-Amhara narrative, often encapsulated by the coded term “neftegna.” This narrative, the group argues, has evolved into a government-backed ideology supported by administrative and legal structures. The AIA believes, as do many other organizations and activists, that this narrative was engineered by Ethiopia’s enemies to weaken the Amhara community and ultimately disintegrate the nation.

Over the past six years under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s leadership, attacks against the Amhara have escalated dramatically, particularly in the Oromia and Benishangul Gumuz regions. These systematic assaults have fueled an armed resistance, with the Fano movement framing its struggle as a fight to “reverse the existential threat” facing the Amhara people.

The AIA’s mission is multifaceted: to mobilize the Amhara diaspora, support the Fano struggle through ideas, finance, diplomacy, and media coverage, and foster collaboration with other Amhara organizations to build a unified front. Its core mission, as outlined in its program, is to support the struggle against the existential threat to the Amhara community. Once this goal is achieved, the AIA envisions contributing to the creation of an Ethiopia that is equitable and livable for all its citizens.

In its closing remarks, the AIA called on various groups and organizations to rally behind the Fano movement. Simultaneously, it urged Fano leaders to remain vigilant against internal and external intrigues that could weaken the movement, emphasizing the importance of unity under a single, cohesive structure.
